Importer's Reasonable Care Checklist
Customs Audits:
US Customs does audits of Importers and Brokers to determine compliance with the regulations. All importers should take the time to make sure they are complying with Customs “Informed Compliance” program before they are targeted for an audit. If you have received notification of an audit from Customs, send us an email if we can be of any assistance. We recommend you download the Reasonable Care Checklist and review it. This will give you a good indication of the types of things that Customs will be looking for.
Internal Audits:
If you would like to set up an Internal Audit program so that you can meet the demands of the Informed Compliance program, we can arrange for a specialist in this area to do a complete review of your program and make recommendations for the future. This is highly recommended for all importers as it is a relatively small expense when compared to the cost of complying after the fact. Don’t risk the future of your company. Binding Rules:
Binding Rulings are used by importers to get a determination from US Customs as to the duties, taxes, fees, markings, etc… of importing specific merchandise. By getting Binding Rulings importers are showing Customs a level of “Reasonable Care”. Usually we can apply for a binding ruling and get a determination within 30 days. Items that are not specifically provided for in the tariff are especially in need of binding rulings. Once issued, the ruling number can be used on the entry to speed the clearance of your merchandise. Customs looks favorably on those importers that take the time to submit binding rulings.
